Fukuoka University Ohori beat Fukuoka Daiichi 80-50 in the boys' final league of the Fukuoka Prefecture qualifier for the All Japan High School Basketball Championship, known as the Winter Cup (WC), earning the prefecture's top spot for the first time in two years. The game was played on the 3rd at the Iizuka City General Gymnasium. Scores by quarter were 18-20, 19-12, 18-11 and 25-7, with the team pulling away in the second half.

Early in the game, Fukuoka University Ohori struggled against Fukuoka Daiichi's quick start and defense, and trailed by two points after the first quarter. From the second quarter on, however, they fixed their defense and found rhythm on offense. They finished with a 30-point victory, a performance that recalled their win in the May Inter-High School Championships qualifier.

Fukuoka University Ohori coach Katamine said after the game, "We talked about making it a game we controlled for all 40 minutes, but we fixed the defense that was not good in the first half and gradually got the game to a running pace." He was harsher about his team's play, saying, "In my view, it was a 50-point performance."

The school had been wary of the game as a mental battle, where mental strength would decide the outcome, and had taken it very seriously.

The team went into the event aiming for a third straight WC title, with a shared determination to secure the No. 1 seed at all costs. Advancing as the top team in the prefecture is a prerequisite for earning a high seed at the national tournament.

Coach Katamine cited limiting turnovers as much as possible and focusing on defensive rebounds as keys to the win. A turnover occurs when a team loses possession to the opponent through a mistake or foul before taking a shot. There were moments when the team lost the ball in its own half and conceded points, so problems remain.

The Winter Cup is the national high school basketball tournament held in Tokyo every late December, with high schools that win their prefectural qualifiers taking part. For Fukuoka University Ohori, the focus will be whether it can win a third straight title at the national tournament.

Fukuoka University Ohori will now represent the prefecture at the national tournament. The stability on defense that the coach pointed out, along with the performance expected of the team's ace, is likely to determine results on the national stage.

Basketball Press view

This game was a test of the team's completeness at the prefectural qualifier stage, where national tournament berths and high seeds are at stake. The coach's harsh assessment of his own team despite the easy win shows his clear focus on the challenges ahead of the national stage. Whether turnovers and rebounding, two fundamentals, can be done with precision will be key to a third straight title. Reading what the coach prioritizes and where he sees room for improvement, beyond the prefectural results, shows where the team stands now.
